A former logistics manager at International Allied Procurement Private Limited has been brought before the courts on allegations of stealing three truckloads of chrome valued at US$25 617.

Tonderai Machonise, 37, of Milton Park, appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing charges of theft of trust property. He is set to return to court on October 30, 2024.

The State alleges that on August 5, 2024, the complainant, Jacob Ziwahwa, reported that Machonise, along with his accomplices Tatenda Tsvuura and Samba Samuriwo—both of whom are involved in transport logistics and have already appeared in court—were contracted to transport ten truckloads of chrome from Mvurwi, Zimbabwe, to South Africa.

According to the court, Machonise allegedly converted three of these truckloads for his personal gain.

The court heard that on July 16, Ziwahwa met with Machonise’s accomplices at Enginet Engineering in Borrowdale, Harare, where an agreement was made for their company to transport the chrome to South Africa. Ziwahwa paid US$11 384 as transport and documentation fees.

However, Machonise and his accomplices failed to transport the ten truckloads as agreed, prompting Ziwahwa to file a police report.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that Machonise’s accomplices had not delivered the chrome to South Africa but had instead stored the loads with various subcontracted transporters without Ziwahwa's knowledge.

Follow-up investigations led to the recovery of seven truckloads of chrome from different transporters' premises. The remaining three loads, valued at US$25,617, were allegedly taken by Machonise for his own use.

Machonise, who was responsible for the logistics of the operation, now faces charges for his role in the theft.
