Zambia has identified its first case of Mpox, involving a 32-year-old Tanzanian national. According to local media, the individual arrived in Zambia in early September and travelled to several locations within the country.

The patient first experienced symptoms on October 2, including mobility issues, muscle aches, fatigue, and a sore throat.

Zambia’s health ministry noted that the patient’s extensive travel within the country has increased the risk of local transmission and cross-border spread.

In response, the ministry has initiated contact tracing, and the patient is receiving treatment at a rural health facility. Additionally, authorities have intensified risk communication and community engagement in the areas the individual visited.

Surveillance and response teams across Zambia have been placed on high alert for potential further cases.

Mpox, declared a Public Health Emergency by the World Health Organization in July, has caused fatalities. Its symptoms include flu-like signs and pus-filled lesions.
