A 36-year-old man from Mandara, Persuade Kaseke, has appeared in court facing fraud charges after allegedly defrauding a complainant of US$13,000 and a car in a botched vehicle transaction.
Kaseke was summoned to the Harare Magistrates' Court and is set to return on November 25, 2024.
According to the prosecution, the incident dates back to March, when the complainant met Kaseke at a car dealership located at the intersection of E.D. Mnangagwa Road and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare. The complainant expressed interest in purchasing a Mercedes Benz C200. Kaseke assured him that the vehicle was in good condition and properly registered in the Zimbabwean vehicle registration system.
Based on these assurances, the complainant agreed to a deal in which he traded his Volvo CX90, valued at US$10,000, and added an additional US$10,000 to secure the Mercedes Benz.
However, after selling the Mercedes Benz to another party, the complainant discovered that the car was not properly registered in the system. He returned the vehicle to Kaseke, who then offered a Jaguar XJL in exchange, requesting an additional US$3,000.
In August, a man named Desire approached the complainant and repossessed the Jaguar XJL, claiming Kaseke still owed him money for the vehicle. As a result, the complainant lost both his Volvo CX90 and a total of US$13,000.
Kaseke was arrested on October 8 in Harare's central business district following the complainant's report.
