Ibbo Mandaza Appointed Acting Secretary-General of the Global Pan-African Movement

The Global Pan-African Movement has elected Zimbabwean academic, author, and publisher Ibbo Mandaza as its Acting Secretary-General during a pivotal pan-Africanism general conference.

Mandaza’s appointment follows the passing of Professor Ikwaweba Bunting on October 3, 2024.

Mandaza, a long-standing advocate for African unity and anti-colonialism, has been a dedicated member of the GPAM since his participation in the 6th and 7th Pan-African Congresses in Tanzania (1976) and Uganda (1994) respectively.

In addition to his new role, Mandaza remains an active member of the GPAM Governing Council and a driving force behind the proposed Pan Afrika Graduate University, envisioned to serve as the intellectual and ideological hub of the movement.

Professor Cheryl Tawede, a notable US academic and advocate for reparations, was also elected as Acting Deputy Secretary-General. Together, they will lead GPAM’s efforts as it prepares for the second phase of the 8th Pan-African Congress in 2025, aiming to mobilize African people globally for the continent’s continued liberation and empowerment.

Ibbo Mandaza is Executive Chairman of the Southern African Political Economy Series (SAPES) Trust, a regional Think Tank and Convenor of the Policy Dialogue Forum.
