Fuel Tanker Explosion in Northern Nigeria Kills 147

On October 16, 2024, a devastating fuel tanker accident in Nigeria's northern state of Jigawa claimed the lives of at least 147 people.

The tragedy occurred late Tuesday when the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and spill petrol, which then ignited, according to reports from police and state emergency services.

Haruna Mairiga, head of Jigawa state emergency services, confirmed the death toll. The tanker had been traveling from Kano to Yobe State in northern Nigeria when it crashed near Majia town in Taura local government area, approximately 530 kilometers (330 miles) north of the capital, Abuja.

Local police spokesperson Lawan Shiisu Adam stated that after the tanker overturned, villagers tried to collect the spilled petrol, which led to the fire that engulfed the area. In addition to those killed, at least 50 people were injured and have been hospitalized in Ringim and Hadejia towns.

A mass burial for the victims was held on Wednesday.

Accidents like this are common in Nigeria, where poorly maintained roads and potholes contribute to frequent fatal crashes. Just last month, another fuel tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria killed 48 people after the tanker collided with another truck, trapping multiple vehicles in the blaze.

This accident is one of the deadliest in recent times, adding to the many challenges Nigeria faces, including security threats and economic hardship.
