Four Burundian nationals recently appeared before the Beitbridge Magistrates Courts, charged with illegal entry under Zimbabwe’s Immigration Act. The accused, identified as Lodrigue Nkurunziza, 27, Leon Tungamwese, 21, Jeanine Gahimbare, 27, and Firmat Niyonkenguruka, 27, were apprehended by immigration officers during an attempted border crossing into South Africa.
According to court records, the group entered Zimbabwe on October 23, 2024. They had reportedly traveled from Lusaka, Zambia, to Harare via the Chirundu Border Post before boarding another bus toward Beitbridge, where they intended to cross into South Africa.
Their journey was cut short when immigration officials stopped and detained them at a roadblock in Beitbridge.
The court imposed a penalty of US$30 for each of the accused, with the alternative of a 30-day prison sentence if they fail to pay. After the fine is settled, the four individuals are scheduled for deportation back to Burundi.
