The Zimbabwean Sables rugby team made a resounding statement on Tuesday evening, dominating the host nation, the United Arab Emirates, with a convincing 61-22 victory at the Sevens Stadium. This impressive performance marked the Sables' return to international action following their triumphant 2024 Rugby Africa Cup campaign.
The match was part of the Sables' Middle East-Asia tour, which will see them face off against South Korea in two upcoming fixtures on Korean soil. Zimbabwe's coach, Piet Benade, fielded a dynamic squad that included former Wallaby Kyle Godwin, who made an impressive debut.
Captain Hilton Mudariki, celebrating his 49th cap, led the team to victory with a brace of tries. After the match, Mudariki expressed gratitude for the passionate support from the crowd and commended the team's performance: "We are very grateful to the crowd that came to support us. We didn’t expect to feel like the home team, but the energy here was incredible. Things worked out very well for us today, especially with the new guys fitting in seamlessly. It was a fantastic all-round performance."
Other notable performances came from Edward Sigauke, who secured a hat-trick, and veteran player Ian Prior, who also contributed to the scoreboard.
