Two police officers have appeared in court following a viral video that allegedly shows them taking bribes from kombis, pirate taxis, and registered public transport vehicles. Sergeant James Chifamba, 46, and Constable Trymore Mukunza, 36, were brought before Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa on charges of criminal abuse of office.

The officers have been remanded in custody, with their bail ruling set for next week. Both the State and the defense counsel will submit written arguments by tomorrow, and the court is expected to make a ruling on November 11, 2024.

According to prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, the officers were deployed for traffic enforcement duties along Mutare Road after the Mabvuku traffic lights towards Harare. They were assigned to stop vehicles and check for any traffic violations.

However, the court heard that instead of performing these duties, the officers reportedly waited for drivers to approach them, engaging in brief conversations and allegedly accepting various items in exchange for favorable treatment.

This conduct, according to the State, was captured on video, forming the basis of the charges against them.
