Zimbabwe is set to undergo a major infrastructure and trade transformation with a newly approved Public-Private Partnership aimed at upgrading the Harare-Nyamapanda Road and Nyamapanda Border Post.

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion led the project’s presentation at a post-cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The initiative is poised to modernise one of the country’s busiest trade routes, improving efficiency for trade with Mozambique. The Harare-Nyamapanda route has long suffered from congestion and delays that hinder the flow of goods and movement of people across borders.

Honorable Professor Mthuli Ncube emphasized the project’s potential to boost Zimbabwe’s economic growth and regional connectivity.

“This project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it serves as a gateway to enhance economic activity between Zambia and Mozambique,” Professor Ncube stated.

“With reduced congestion and a smoother travel experience, we envision a future where trade flows efficiently, opening new opportunities for our local businesses.”

The government foresees a broad range of benefits from the project, including job creation, increased revenue, and a rise in trade volumes, all of which are expected to lower unemployment rates. Beyond the economic impacts, Professor Ncube added, “this upgrade will improve the quality of life for local residents by cutting travel time and reducing cross-border movement costs.”

Revenue generated from toll collections will not only fund the project’s maintenance but also provide sustainable returns for investors, making the initiative a win-win for both the government and the private sector.
