Bright Maturura, a 34-year-old resident of Nyanga, received a fully suspended 12-month prison sentence after being convicted of illegally tapping electricity for his tuckshop.
The Nyanga Magistrates' Court found Maturura guilty of bypassing the electricity meter by directly connecting a power line from the national grid to his tuckshop, located at Matema Business Centre, in violation of the Electricity Act (Chapter 13:19).
The court heard that Maturura carried out the illegal connection in July 2020. The offense came to light on December 14, 2023, when ZESA employees discovered the setup and estimated the resulting financial loss at US$8,712.
The 12-month prison sentence was suspended on the condition that Maturura performs 420 hours of community service at Matema Primary School.
