A Zimbabwean student at Parul University has been arrested in Vadodara city, India over allegations of assaulting a man and forcibly transferring money from the bank account of the complainant.

The student has been charged with obscene acts and extortion.

In addition Washington Takura Muzwire has been charged with assault for slapping a police constable on duty who had intervened in the matter.

The charges are that last Wednesday, Washington allegedly assaulted the complainant Rameshkumar Nandlal Agarwal – a construction site manager looking after the property the accused had rented and was looking to vacate.

The accused allegedly also forcefully transferred a sum of Rs 14,000 (about US$166) from Agarwal’s bank account into his own.

In his complaint, Agarwal has said the accused assaulted him when he tried to intervene in an argument between Washington and the flat owner’s mother over returning the deposit money.

“I told him the aged woman was alone at home, yet he barged in. When I asked him to leave, he dragged me to the lift, stripped me to my undergarments and assaulted me continuously, while forcing me to transfer money through a payment app,” said Agarwal.

“He wanted his Rs 16,000 deposit back. The owner stalled as he wanted to follow the due process.”
