A Harare man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a car parked at Bible Baptist Church in Chisipite and stealing property worth US$550.
Tafadzwa Mupfururirwa, 27, of Waterfalls, appeared before Magistrate Apollonia Marutya at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing theft charges.
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi told the court that on October 25, the complainant parked his Toyota Prado at Bible Baptist Church and locked all the doors before entering the building.
It is alleged that Mupfururirwa and three accomplices, who are still at large, smashed the left-side windows of the vehicle and stole several items, including a squash bag, two squash rackets, three pairs of shoes, squash balls, socks, a resistance bag, a pair of formal shoes, a school exercise book, and stationery.
The complainant heard his car alarm and rushed outside, discovering the break-in. He reportedly saw an Audi, bearing registration number AGG 5965, speeding away from the scene and gave chase.
The court heard that Mupfururirwa lost control of the Audi during the pursuit and crashed into a tree. Members of the public managed to apprehend one of the accomplices, Tinashe Gaisoni, who sustained injuries during the crash and is already on remand.
Gaisoni implicated Mupfururirwa as one of the accomplices and identified him as the owner of the Audi used in the crime.
Police recovered the stolen property from Mupfururirwa’s vehicle, and items worth $550 were returned to the complainant.
Mupfururirwa has been remanded in custody and is set to appear in court on December 16 for routine remand proceedings.
