A 61-year-old man has been slammed with 18 years imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old juvenile.
Shame Chachengwa appeared before magistrate Sandra Mupindu at the Harare Magistrates' Courts charged with rape.
The State through prosecutor Zvikomborero Mupasa proved that on November 17, 2024, Chachengwa went to church where the complainant resided, intending to cut down trees at the premise.
The court heard that the complainant went to play close to where Chachengwa was doing his work.
Chachengwa then brought an ice cream from the street and gave the complainant.
After that, he unbuckled his belt, exposing his private part. The complainant told Chachengwa that she was not interested in what he was about to do and ran away from him.
The complainant then decided to take her belongings so that she could go to her place of residence. During the process of picking up her things, her pant dropped as a result of being loose.
She tried to wear the pant but Chachengwa grabbed her hand. He fondled the complainant's private part with another hand.
Chachengwa pushed the complainant, and she fell on the bench with her back. He then raped her, Chachengwa told the complainant not to make any noise, and she complied.
After the act, she went home and never told anyone. The matter was unearthed on November 24, when the complainant's mother saw her not walking well.
She asked her what had happened but did not disclose. The complainant later disclosed to her mother's friend.
