A 25-year-old man, Ndumiso Nxumalo, has been arrested in connection with a violent string of nighttime robberies and an attempted murder in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb.
Police say the crime spree spanned from June 2 to July 24, 2025, and involved Nxumalo and his accomplice, Themba Moyo, who is still at large.
The pair allegedly targeted individuals walking alone at night, threatening them with dangerous weapons including knives, a machete, and an axe before stealing their belongings.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that a breakthrough came when officers recovered eight stolen smartphones from a cellphone dealer in Bulawayo’s central business district. This led to Nxumalo’s arrest.
He has since been linked to seven robbery cases and one attempted murder — all in Cowdray Park.
One of the more brutal attacks occurred on July 15, when the suspects threatened a victim with knives and an axe, robbing him of a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, cash, and other valuables.
On July 21, the duo reportedly posed as commuters in the city centre and boarded a Toyota Wish. Once in Cowdray Park, they allegedly turned on the driver, robbing him of his vehicle and personal items. The stolen car was later discovered abandoned in Tsholotsho.
Another incident occurred on July 24 near Tategulu Primary School, where a 56-year-old man was robbed of his Samsung Galaxy A16 and other possessions.
The same night, a 52-year-old man was attacked near Emagasini, sustaining a head injury after being struck with an axe. His black satchel and speaker were stolen.
In a separate robbery case, police have also arrested two suspects — Dylan Ndlovu ,26, and Vuyani Ndlovu ,28, — in connection with a robbery at Happy Valley C Mine on August 2.
They were part of a gang of five who allegedly stole three smartphones, blankets, groceries, shoes, and a solar panel.
Police recovered some of the stolen items, including shoes, a baton, a bucket, 50 kilograms of gold ore, and a hammer mill cracker.
