In the heart of Timire Ward 5, Councilor Rhodha Mawedzere faces mounting allegations of misappropriating social welfare goods meant for the community’s most vulnerable. Residents accuse her of favoritism and neglect, deepening the struggles of those already grappling with poverty.

Community members claim that essential food aid has been distributed preferentially to Mawedzere’s close allies and campaign supporters, leaving the elderly and disabled—those most in need—without assistance.

"They are prioritizing youths and sidelining the elderly, who are unable to fend for themselves," lamented Mai Taku, a resident. She shared her disheartening experience with the distribution officials, saying, "When I approached one of the people in charge, they treated me badly and told me to go away and mind my own business."

Another resident, Mai Russel, echoed these sentiments. "The people writing names for distribution were those who campaigned for the councilor. They only included their friends, leaving the truly vulnerable with nothing," she said.

The elderly, in particular, have voiced their anguish. One elderly woman spoke about her desperate circumstances: "I rely on a monthly pension of just $60, which barely covers my medical bills. When I inquired about the distribution list, I was dismissed and ignored."

She added that severe drought conditions have worsened her situation, making it impossible to grow crops. "I harvested tears," she said, summing up her failed attempts to feed her family.

Another resident added, “It’s not just about food; it’s about survival. Every day is a struggle. We can’t keep living like this.”

The controversy has drawn the attention of government authorities. Simon Masanga, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare, confirmed that investigations into the allegations are underway.

“We take these reports very seriously. Our priority is ensuring that aid reaches the truly needy,” he said, acknowledging similar complaints in other communities.

The allegations against Councilor Mawedzere raise serious questions about accountability and transparency in local governance. As the investigation unfolds, residents of Timire Ward 5 hope for swift action to ensure that social welfare programs benefit those they are designed to help.

For now, the community remains in turmoil, with many demanding that the local leadership take responsibility for its failings and restore equity in the distribution of aid.
