A Zvishavane man lost US$15 000 last month in a sophisticated scam orchestrated by five men in Harare. One of the suspects, Wellington Nhiwatiwa, 46, appeared before magistrate Isheanesu Matova at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing fraud charges.

The court heard that on November 19, the complainant had just disembarked from an Inter-Africa bus from Zvishavane when the suspects lured him into a trap. Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu explained that the group planted a bundle of counterfeit notes wrapped in plastic near the complainant, claiming they had stumbled upon a large sum of money.

The complainant was persuaded to accompany the group to Harare’s Kopje Mountain to “share” the money. While there, five other men arrived, posing as police officers. They allegedly seized the complainant’s satchel containing US$15 000 and fled the scene.

Nhiwatiwa, represented by his lawyer, challenged his placement on remand. The court ordered him to return on Thursday for a ruling. Meanwhile, the police are pursuing the other suspects, who remain at large.
