A groundbreaking historical film, Munhumutapa: The Rise of an Empire, chronicling the rise and achievements of the Munhumutapa Empire under the legendary Nyatsimba Mutota, is set for a highly anticipated debut in May 2025.
Directed and produced by Stephen Mutsago, the film aims to connect Zimbabwe's rich cultural heritage with the nation's contemporary developmental aspirations under the Second Republic.
The film marks the first installment of an ambitious eight-part series that seeks to revive and showcase the heritage and enduring legacy of the Mutapa Empire.
Production officially commenced on December 2, 2024, with the series designed to explore themes of visionary leadership, economic growth, and infrastructural development—key pillars of Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 goals.
In a statement, Mutsago underscored the significance of revisiting Mutota’s legacy, viewing it as a powerful tool to inspire national pride, unity, and a renewed sense of cultural identity.
“Munhumutapa is not just a historical retelling; it is a celebration of our cultural resilience and identity as a nation. By bringing the story of Nyatsimba Mutota to life, we hope to ignite a collective sense of pride and unity, reminding Zimbabweans of the enduring importance of their heritage in shaping our future,” Mutsago said.
Drawing parallels between the leadership of Mutota and Zimbabwe’s modern-day national objectives, Mutsago highlighted how Mutota’s strategic vision in promoting trade relations and economic prosperity aligns with the country’s current focus on development.
“Mutota’s visionary leadership laid the foundation for a prosperous and self-reliant society, and today, Zimbabwe is echoing this commitment to economic growth, food security, and international cooperation through the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1). The lessons from Mutota’s reign remain relevant and can inspire us as we strive for a more stable and prosperous nation,” Mutsago noted.
The film boasts an impressive cast of celebrated Zimbabwean talents, including former football star Alois Bunjira, renowned actors Tinashe Nengomasha, Charles Mzemba, and Freddy Manjalima, affectionately known as Kapfupi. Their involvement promises to elevate the film’s historical authenticity while ensuring its widespread appeal.
With Munhumutapa: The Rise of an Empire, Mutsago aims to craft a cinematic masterpiece that not only honors Zimbabwe’s past but also serves as a powerful source of inspiration for the nation’s future, fostering unity and pride in Zimbabwe’s rich cultural legacy.
