The Chigubhu Lantern Initiative, a groundbreaking project by Zambezi Ark Technologies, has been awarded the Best Circular Economy Project in the prestigious TotalEnergies Startupper Challenge. This remarkable achievement places the Zimbabwean initiative among the top 100 Startupper winners from 32 African countries, each recognized for their innovative contributions to solving pressing global challenges.

The Chigubhu Lantern Initiative focuses on waste management and renewable energy, equipping young people with practical skills to promote a sustainable circular economy. At the heart of the project is the mission to minimize waste by turning discarded materials into innovative and practical solutions, such as solar-powered lanterns made from repurposed plastic containers.

Speaking about the initiative’s success, Aluwaine Manyonga, founder of Zambezi Ark Technologies, shared his excitement: “This recognition is a testament to the power of innovation in addressing sustainability challenges. Our goal has always been to inspire young people to see waste as a resource and equip them with skills to create solutions that benefit communities and the environment.”

The award was presented during a celebratory event in Cape Town, South Africa, where winners from across the continent gathered to showcase their projects. The event was not only an opportunity to celebrate achievements but also to connect with other changemakers driving impactful solutions for Africa’s development.

“Being part of the TotalEnergies Startupper Challenge has been an incredible journey,” Manyonga said.

“It’s inspiring to meet others who share a vision for a sustainable future and to learn from their experiences.”

Zimbabwe was well-represented at the event, with innovators Tapiwa Chamboko and Tichaona Mathe also making the winners’ list. Their inclusion highlights the growing influence of Zimbabwean startups in addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges.

The TotalEnergies Startupper Challenge, organized by TotalEnergies, aims to support young entrepreneurs whose projects demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and a positive impact on local communities. The competition has become a platform for African innovators to gain visibility and support for their groundbreaking ideas.

As for the future, Zambezi Ark Technologies plans to expand the Chigubhu Lantern Initiative, reaching more communities and scaling up its impact. “This is just the beginning,” Manyonga emphasized.

"We are committed to creating a Zimbabwe and an Africa where waste is transformed into wealth and where young people lead the way in building a greener, more sustainable future.”

The recognition of the Chigubhu Lantern Initiative marks a significant milestone for Zambezi Ark Technologies and reinforces the importance of local solutions in addressing global challenges.
