The Zimbabwe Republic Police has apprehended Mufaro Mupandira ,29, and Brandon Chitiyo ,21, in connection with a string of motor vehicle robberies that occurred in and around Harare between December 21 and December 29, 2024.
The suspects reportedly posed as genuine passengers to target taxis and private vehicles.
In a press statement, ZRP revealed, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Mufaro Mupandira, 29, and Brandon Chitiyo, 21, in connection with a spate of robbery cases which occurred in and around Harare between 21st and 29th December 2024.”
On December 29, detectives from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad tracked the suspects after receiving intelligence about their activities. Following a high-speed chase from Sam Nujoma Bus Terminus to the corner of Kenneth Kaunda and Angwa Streets in Harare’s Central Business District, the two were arrested.
Police recovered a Mazda Familia vehicle with registration number AGH 5691, stolen from Golf Club, Beatrice, earlier that day. The vehicle was being used as a getaway car after the suspects allegedly hired the driver from the Boka area in Harare.
The statement further noted, “The arrest led to the recovery of a Mazda Familia vehicle, registration number AGH 5691, which was stolen at Golf Club, Beatrice on 29th December 2024.”
The suspects later directed investigators to Coventry Road, Harare, where they claimed to have hidden machetes used during the robberies. However, they attempted to flee and were shot in the legs by police officers.
Investigations have linked the suspects to four other vehicle robbery cases, including a December 21 incident in Chitungwiza where a Honda Fit (AFM 9236), a cellphone, and USD 17.00 were stolen.
Another case occurred on December 22 in Domboshava, where a Honda Fit taxi (AEL 7871), USD 39.00, and a cellphone were stolen after the driver was attacked and dumped at Chabwino Farm, Juru.
Police are now searching for Fidelis Muchemwa, an accomplice believed to have been involved in the crimes. Authorities have urged the public to assist with any information about Muchemwa’s whereabouts.
The statement emphasized, “The suspects’ accomplice, Fidelis Muchemwa, is on the run. Anyone with information which may lead to the arrest of the suspect is encouraged to contact National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest Police Station.”
Investigations are ongoing as the ZRP continues efforts to bring all culprits to justice and ensure public safety.
