Zimbabwean law enforcement authorities are grappling with a surge in violent robberies, with recent incidents highlighting the escalating threat to public safety.
On October 26, 2024, a brazen robbery took place at a grocery store in Tilcor Industry, Chitungwiza. Three armed robbers, wielding a pistol, stormed the shop, firing a warning shot and forcing employees and customers to the ground. The assailants swiftly made off with a total of US$8,705 from two tills before fleeing the scene in a Honda Fit.
Just weeks earlier, on October 3, 2024, a high-profile armed robbery occurred at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo. Six masked men, armed with pistols, targeted a safeguard truck, making off with approximately US$4 million in broad daylight. The robbery took place at the corner of 9th Avenue and Fife Street, in the heart of the city.
These incidents underscore the growing boldness of criminals and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating crime. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is urging the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
