
Late businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo has been accorded Provincial Hero status, two days after he was killed in a helicopter crash in Mashonaland East.
The honour was announced on Friday by Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire, who said he had been sent by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to communicate the decision to the Chivayo family.
Speaking at the family home in Gletwin, Harare, Machakaire announced that the President had approved the conferment of the Provincial Hero status on the late businessman.

“I have been sent here by His Excellency the President to tell you that the son Chivayo has been declared a Provincial Hero,” Machakaire said.
The declaration came as relatives, friends, political figures, church leaders and other mourners gathered to pay their respects to Chivayo.
Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and three other people died on Wednesday, September 30, when their Bell 430 helicopter crashed in the Kudenga area near Marondera while travelling from Chikomba to Harare. There were no survivors. The victims included Chivayo and Muteke, security aide Senelisiwe Magagula, pilot Captain Kelvin T. Soda and co-pilot Captain Courage Mutavirwa.
