Sultra Retimani is a seasoned martial artist with over 22 years of experience in karate, including 9 years as a full-time instructor. His journey into martial arts began with a simple desire for a physical form of recreation that would also provide the benefits of self-defense.

However, what started as a pursuit for personal fitness evolved into a deep passion for the discipline, philosophy, and art of karate.

Sultra’s path to karate began with the fascination for the beauty and grace of the body’s movements, combined with the desire to learn precise techniques and master them to the highest standards. As he reflects on his early days in karate, he says:

"I joined karate because I was looking for something enjoyable and physically engaging, but what truly inspired me was the elegance in the movements and the challenge of mastering the techniques to perfection."

Over the years, Sultra’s commitment to karate deepened, and he decided to become a full-time instructor, dedicating his life to the development of the next generation of martial artists.

For Sultra, karate is more than just a physical practice—it’s a holistic way of life that improves an individual’s strength, speed, technique, and moral fiber. He emphasizes that karate offers profound benefits not only for physical fitness but for spiritual and mental development. He shares.

"Karate helps you to improve yourself physically, spiritually, and morally. It requires strength, speed, and technique, but the real power lies in its ability to transform you into a better person—inside and outside the dojo."

The core principles of karate, including discipline, self-control, self-awareness, and focus, have had a lasting impact on Sultra's life. He believes these principles help karatekas (karate practitioners) build mental toughness, emotional regulation, and the ability to navigate the world around them with greater clarity and resilience.

"The key principles of karate have a profound impact on your life. They teach you how to focus, how to regulate your emotions, and how to be resilient in the face of adversity. These are life skills that extend far beyond the dojo."

While karate itself builds strength, power, and confidence, Sultra has found that combining karate training with bodybuilding has greatly enhanced his physical abilities. He credits weightlifting with increasing his power and strength, which has translated into better performance both in competitions and in his daily training. He explains:

"Since I started lifting weights, I’ve gained more power and strength than ever before. It’s not just about building muscle; it’s about becoming a stronger, more confident person, both physically and mentally."

This combination of bodybuilding and karate has helped Sultra elevate his skill level, resulting in numerous competition victories throughout his career. His dedication to continuous improvement is evident in his personal achievements and his passion for teaching others.

Like many martial artists, Sultra has faced significant challenges along his journey, particularly in areas such as financial struggles and access to proper sporting equipment. However, he has never allowed these obstacles to deter him from his path. Karate, he believes, teaches resilience, perseverance, and the ability to push through difficult situations.

"I have faced many challenges, especially financial ones, and the lack of proper equipment. But karate has taught me to keep going despite the difficulties. It’s all about pushing through the pain, developing resilience, and never giving up."

These challenges have only strengthened his resolve, and he encourages his students to adopt the same mindset.

For Sultra, becoming a true karateka involves cultivating a range of essential qualities, such as discipline, self-control, self-awareness, focus, and concentration. These attributes, he believes, are key to a successful and fulfilling martial arts journey. He adds:

"A true karateka must develop discipline, self-control, self-awareness, focus, and concentration. These qualities not only make you a better martial artist, but they make you a better person in all aspects of life."

Today, karate is enjoyed by millions of people worldwide, from beginners to seasoned practitioners. Its influence extends across cultures, often seen in films, books, and on television. Sultra is proud to be part of this global community, and as a member of the Southern Africa Regional Anti-Corruption Organization, he advocates for integrity, perseverance, and hard work in both martial arts and life.

"Karate has been practiced for over two thousand years, and its teachings are still as relevant today as they were back then. Whether in the dojo or in the world outside, perseverance is key. No pain, no gain. More pain, more gain. It’s all part of the journey."

He advises all aspiring karatekas to train hard, stay focused, and understand that the journey is not easy but is immensely rewarding.

"Focus on the positive side, enjoy the pain and the challenge, and remember that perseverance is the key to success. Ous, ous!"

Sultra Retimani’s journey in karate is a reflection of the power of martial arts to shape and transform lives. His dedication to his craft, his students, and the principles of karate continues to inspire those around him.

As a teacher and practitioner, he embodies the essence of karate—strength, discipline, and unwavering focus. For Sultra, the journey never ends, and the pursuit of mastery in karate is a lifelong commitment.
