In a significant step toward addressing Harare’s water challenges, the Ministry of Local Government, Harare City Council, Hangzhou Laison Technology, and Helcraw Electrical have signed an agreement to develop a new water treatment plant and implement smart water meters.

The project, unveiled during a ceremony on Thursday, aims to improve water supply efficiency, reduce delivery costs, and ensure affordable access for residents. The initiative aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s directive to deliver world-class water services by 2030.

Speaking at the event, Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe expressed confidence in the project’s transformative potential. "This partnership demonstrates our commitment to sustainable urban development and aligns with our vision for a modern Zimbabwe," he said.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume emphasized collaboration as the foundation for success, drawing inspiration from cities like Kigali and New Cairo. "The synergy between local authorities, central government, and private players is key to achieving progress," he noted.

Hangzhou Laison Technology will spearhead the smart water metering system, which is expected to optimize water management and establish Harare as a regional benchmark for efficiency.

Helcraw Electrical CEO Brendon Jere underscored the project’s comprehensive approach, saying it would "ensure sustainable water distribution and billing, addressing both current and future needs."

The development marks a major milestone in Harare’s journey toward modernized infrastructure and improved quality of life for its residents.
