A 25-year-old Triangle woman accused of drowning her two young daughters in a canal before attempting to take her own life has appeared in court on murder charges.

Blessing Chiromonye was brought before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court following the tragic incident on January 8, 2025.

Prosecutors allege Chiromonye threw her daughters, aged 4 and 8, into Triangle’s main water canal, causing their deaths. She reportedly tried to end her own life by jumping into the canal but was ejected by the water’s current.

After the failed suicide attempt, Chiromonye is said to have gone home, changed her clothes, and tried to flee. However, a commuter omnibus driver, tipped off about the incident, turned her over to the police, leading to her arrest.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe confirmed her remand in custody until January 23, 2025.

In an unrelated tragedy, a two-year-old boy drowned in Harare’s Waterfalls suburb after accidentally falling into an open pit intended for a septic tank. The incident occurred while the child was playing at a neighbor’s house.

Police retrieved the body, which was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital for a post-mortem.
