The Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces have formally announced the handover of a collection of artefacts to the Museum of African Liberation in Harare.
The announcement was made on January 14, 2025, during a meeting in Havana, Cuba, between the FAR Command Element and a Zimbabwean delegation led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's Special Envoy on the Museum of African Liberation, Ambassador Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.
Among the artefacts to be handed over are armoured vehicles used in the historic Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, a pistol belonging to the iconic Cuban revolutionary leader Comandante Fidel Castro, and other items related to Cuba's immense contributions to African liberation struggles.
The Museum of African Liberation, located in Harare, is the brainchild of the Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK) and is being developed with full support from the Government of Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi, CEO of INSTAK, welcomed the donation and expressed gratitude to the Cuban government and the FAR.
“We would like to thank you for the gesture and to assure you and guarantee the security and safety of these artefacts. We will make sure that these will be forever taken care of sacredly,” he said.
Ambassador Muzawazi explained that the Museum has a dedicated space for the Republic of Cuba within a section reserved for the Southern African Development Community (SADC), highlighting the significance of Cuba's role in the region's liberation.
"We've got a section on SADC, as well as for Cuba, Russia, and China, which is now 80 percent complete in terms of the structure. With respect to exterior spaces, some of the equipment from Cuba can be displayed there upon arrival. This is within the space provided for and administered by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
"Some of the artefacts we are receiving will be inside the Museum, and that structure is nearing completion."
Ambassador Muzawazi also stated that the Zimbabwe section of the Museum was nearly 100 percent complete, while the entire superstructure of the facility stands at 25 percent readiness.
The Zimbabwean delegation is expected to meet the President of the Council of the Republic of Cuba, H.E. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez. Ambassador Mumbengegwi will deliver a Special Message from H.E. President Dr. Mnangagwa to H.E. President Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
The handover of Cuban artefacts marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the Museum of African Liberation Project.
