For the first time in their young lives, Denzel Timire and Princess Tichiwangani boarded a plane bound for Lagos, Nigeria to represent Zimbabwe at the 2025 Africa Hopes Week & Challenge, held from July 20–25. This prestigious event brings together Africa’s top table tennis talents born in 2013 or later, offering elite training and international exposure.

Denzel secured his spot after winning a tough round-robin trial in Mutare, while 9-year-old Princess, Zimbabwe’s Under-13 champion, earned selection with an unbeaten record. Both are making their international debuts, a proud moment for the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU).

They are training under Eva Jeler, a globally respected coach known for developing future champions. Alongside them, Mrs. Fungai Tanhara is taking part in the ITTF’s “My Gender, My Strength” coaching program, gaining modern techniques to support Zimbabwe’s coaching future.

The trip, fully funded by the ITTF and ZTTU, was made possible with help from Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Sports and the Nigerian Embassy.

As tournament play begins, hopes are high. Win or lose, Denzel and Princess have already made their mark. As ZTTU puts it: “Today they play in Lagos—tomorrow, who knows? The world is theirs to conquer.”
