The period ending September 30, 2024, marked a significant milestone for Star Africa Corporation’s Goldstar Sugars division, which achieved remarkable growth in both production and sales volumes despite operating in a complex economic environment.
GSS reported a 66% increase in production and a 55% surge in sales volumes compared to the same period in the prior year. This robust performance was driven by the resolution of raw sugar supply challenges and improved plant availability, enabling the production of 36,818 tonnes of granulated white sugar. Correspondingly, sales volumes reached 36,625 tonnes, underscoring the company’s enhanced operational efficiency.
The reinstatement of duty on imports further bolstered local market competitiveness, helping GSS secure a more prominent position in the sugar industry. These improvements reflect the effectiveness of Star Africa’s strategic initiatives aimed at stabilizing supply chains and optimizing production processes.
During the review period, the GSS plant maintained its certification by The Coca-Cola Company and sustained its Food Safety Certification under the FSSC 22000 series. These endorsements reaffirm GSS’s commitment to delivering high-quality products that meet international standards, thereby strengthening its reputation as a trusted supplier in the region.
Despite its successes, GSS faced significant challenges, particularly persistent power outages. The reliance on diesel generators to counter erratic power supplies added to operational costs, prompting management to engage actively with the power utility provider in pursuit of sustainable solutions.
“Power supply challenges remain a critical concern for our operations. We are committed to working closely with the relevant authorities to address these issues and reduce dependency on costly alternatives,” stated the management.
Looking ahead, GSS is poised to leverage its increased production capacity and robust supply chain to sustain its growth trajectory. However, external pressures such as exchange rate volatility, inflation, and policy uncertainties in the sugar industry remain potential hurdles.
To mitigate these risks, Star Africa Corporation is focused on strategic adjustments, including cost optimization and advocacy through the Zimbabwe Sugar Association to ensure fair regulatory policies. By maintaining its emphasis on quality, efficiency, and market responsiveness, GSS aims to reinforce its leadership in the local sugar industry while exploring opportunities for expansion.
“Our commitment to navigating an uncertain operating environment with innovative strategies and unwavering focus on operational excellence remains steadfast. The achievements of GSS reflect our ability to adapt and thrive despite external challenges,” remarked Chairman, Dr Rungano Mbire.
