Priscilla Chigumba, the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, is leading a six-member delegation from Zimbabwe to observe the presidential elections taking place in Belarus today (Sunday).

The elections are a significant event as Belarusian voters head to the polls, with voting officially starting at 8:00 AM local time.

In interviews with Belarusian media, Justice Chigumba shared her impressions of the voting process, noting the high level of organization and transparency.

This visit is part of a broader, longstanding relationship between Zimbabwe and Belarus, with both countries enjoying strong bilateral ties.

These ties have been cemented over the years through frequent exchanges of visits by the heads of state. Both countries continue to strengthen their cooperation in various sectors, including trade, agriculture, defense, and education.

Notably, Zimbabwe has benefited from Belarusian expertise in sectors such as farming machinery and technical education.

In the Belarusian presidential race, five candidates are vying for the presidency, with the incumbent, President Alexander Lukashenko, leading the contest.

Other candidates include Liberal Democrats chairperson Oleg Gaidukevich, Communist Party’s Central Committee First Secretary Sergei Sirankov, former legislator Anna Kanapatskaya, and the chairperson of the Republican Labour Party, Alexander Khizhnyak.

This ongoing cooperation underscores the growing ties between the two nations and reflects their shared commitment to fostering diplomatic and economic collaboration on the international stage.
