A 34-year-old Harare policeman, Tonderai Manyika, has been arraigned before the courts on charges of resisting arrest and abuse of duty. Manyika, who was released on $50 bail, is accused of aiding wars over an illegal kombi rank in Harare's central business district.
According to prosecutor Tinotenda Masimba, Manyika was hired to intimidate other rank marshals due to his physical build. However, when confronted by the police, Manyika allegedly resisted arrest, assaulted a policeman, and attempted to flee.
A recent news report indicated that rank marshal mafia gangs are collecting as much as US$300 000 a week from tranporters.
Several police officers have appeared in court accused of running commuter operation associations that are fronts for extortion rackets targeting kombi crews.
Manyika is expected back in court on February 20 pending finalization of investigations.
