A 40-year-old woman, Tarisai Ngwarati, has appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing charges of fraud after allegedly defrauding a home seeker of US$13 250 in a fake residential stand deal.

Ngwarati, who is accused of working with an accomplice still at large, is expected back in court on February 26, 2025.

According to the State, the complainant was searching for a residential stand when Ngwarati approached him, claiming that her associate, Denias Makebhe, was an employee of the Ministry of Local Government with a stand for sale in Mabelreign, Harare.

Ngwarati allegedly convinced the complainant that the paperwork was legitimate, citing Makebhe’s supposed government position as proof of authenticity. The complainant proceeded to pay US$12,000 as the purchase price to Ngwarati and her accomplice.

In addition, the complainant paid US$400 for the processing of a lease with the Ministry of Local Government, US$600 as an agent’s fee, and US$250 for the drafting of the agreement of sale.

However, suspicions arose when the complainant sought verification from the Ministry of Local Government, only to discover that the stand in question was state land and that Makebhe was not employed by the ministry.

Efforts to recover the money were unsuccessful, with Ngwarati only managing to refund US$1,000. The complainant ultimately lost US$13 250.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to apprehend Ngwarati’s co-accused.
