Warwick shire farm residents in court over public violence charges

Zim Now Writer

Thirty-two residents of Warwick Shire farm were hauled before the courts on Monday, facing charges of public violence after protesting the subdivision of the farm to make way for residential stands. The group, including Lawrence Munyaru and his neighbors, appeared before Magistrate Apolonia Marutya, who remanded them in custody pending the finalization of their bail application.

According to the State, the accused individuals conspired and gathered at the farm on January 30, 2025, to protest the planned development. However, their demonstration allegedly turned violent, with the group vandalizing properties and setting houses ablaze within the farm.

The accused are said to have targeted two land developers, Southlands and Loom Light, destroying site offices, store rooms, and construction equipment. The total value of the damaged property has yet to be determined.

The residents' protest was sparked by the planned subdivision of the farm, which they claim will disrupt their livelihoods. However, their actions have been met with swift condemnation from authorities, who accuse them of engaging in public violence.
