A teenage boy sprinted for his life on Wednesday afternoon, narrowly escaping a man believed to be mentally challenged who went on a killing spree that left five villagers dead in Bhelasi area, Madlambuzi village.
According to Ward 11 councillor Siphosenkosi Moyo, quoted in Chronicle, the boy was visiting relatives when the assailant stormed a homestead and attacked three female family members, killing them with logs. The teenager outran the attacker, raising alarm on the ongoing carnage.
The attacks began earlier at an elderly couple’s homestead, where the suspect fatally assaulted the husband and left his wife in a coma. After killing the three women—including a 15-year-old girl—the man moved to a nearby community dam. There, he struck down a woman who was doing laundry, killing her instantly.
Villagers later joined police in a tense manhunt, apprehending the suspect hours after the spree.
The Police have not yet issued a statement on the matter.
The massacre follows another shocking case in Chikombedzi earlier this month when an “unknown suspect,” emerged from the shadows and stabbed Sithokozile Siwawa to death during a funeral wake.
