The Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) are set to sign a Grant Agreement for a new project aimed at enhancing accountability and citizen participation in regional integration.

The three-year initiative, funded with €1.4 million from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the European Union (EU), and the German Federal Government, seeks to strengthen democratic governance, promote gender equality, and advance regional integration across SADC member states.

SADC PF’s Democracy, Governance & Human Rights Programme Manager, Sheuneni Kurasha, stated that the project builds on a previous initiative implemented from 2019 to 2023. The new initiative will focus on three key areas: strengthening SADC PF’s internal capacity, supporting the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) (2020–2030), and developing a Model Law on Constitutionalism and the Law.

A major component will emphasize gender equality, empowering women in political and decision-making roles. Robson Chakwana, GIZ Programme Manager, highlighted the project’s potential to strengthen SADC PF’s capacity and drive regional integration.

SADC PF Secretary-General Boemo Sekgoma welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing its role in expanding the Forum’s regional influence and supporting democracy. She reaffirmed the commitment to engaging non-state actors and strengthening partnerships with European institutions focused on governance, gender equality, and climate action.

The signing of the Grant Agreement is expected soon, marking a significant milestone in enhancing governance and citizen engagement across the SADC region.
