A delegation from the Southern African Development Community conducted an assessment study at the Beitbridge Border Post from February 12 to 14, 2025, evaluating its operational efficiency and trade facilitation measures.
Led by Mr. Alcides Monteiro, Senior Programme Officer for Customs at the SADC Secretariat, the delegation examined key aspects such as operating hours, transit procedures, ICT connectivity, and the implementation of Coordinated Border Management (CBM) and One Stop Border Post (OSBP) concepts.
This comes after a report established that Beitbridge and Chirundu borders are inefficient.

The initiative aligns with regional efforts to enhance trade and economic integration.
Beitbridge, a crucial gateway between Zimbabwe and South Africa on the North-South Trade Corridor, has undergone significant infrastructure upgrades, including modern warehouses, cold storage units, and improved clearance procedures.
Operating 24/7, the border post now processes up to 1,000 trucks daily, with clearance times reduced to as little as one hour for light vehicles.
Mr. Batsirai Chadzingwa, Commissioner for Customs and Excise at ZIMRA, highlighted ongoing government efforts to further streamline trade processes. The findings from this assessment are expected to contribute to future improvements, reinforcing Beitbridge’s role as a key regional trade hub.
