City of Harare’s Environment Management Committee has resolved that Council rations water to ensure equitable distribution of water in the city.

In a statement, council said they are working out a sustainable solution to the city’s water challenges.

The council said there is under-production of water at the city’s Water works.

“Production at Morton Jaffray Water Works currently stands at 136 megalitres out of an available capacity of 450ML and Prince Edward 78.

“Residents are therefore encouraged to use availed supplies conservatively all the time they receive water,” reads the statement.

In the past, council said suppressed water production was due to inconsistent deliveries of locally sourced liquid aluminium sulphate and its imported granular substitute.

On Sunday, Council received four loads of imported granular, aluminium sulphate with a further 16 loads still en route to Harare from Beira.

“Our local aluminium sulphate supplier is facing production challenges while the delivery of the imported granular substitute has also been inconsistent thereby affecting portable water production and subsequent equitable distribution to residents of Harare,” reads the statement.

Meanwhile, residents of Glen Norah have gone for more than two weeks without running water.
