The United Nations Office for Projects has donated ZWL$1.2 billion to Chipinge Town Council which is expected to ease the local authority’s never-ending water supply challenges.

The funds will be used to expand the water reticulation system from the main water supply, Bangazani Dam.

Acting town secretary, James Mutemera, said the project will upgrade the storage tanks.

“Chipinge Town Council and UNOPS are embarking on a massive water project that seeks to end the town’s water woes. We received funding from UNOPS to upgrade the water systems from the main dam.

“The water pipes will be enlarged in order to meet the growing demand of water in the town. The project will also see storage being upgraded to an 8,5 million-litre tank.

“The volume of the treated water will also be improved by this project,” he said.

Mutemera also said the programme will empower the local community through job creation.

The town’s residents had no water due to a power line fault which happened last Sunday.
