Two police officers, Jefter Nkomazanah and Crynot Fablano, have been charged with criminal abuse of office after allegedly stealing US$10 000 from a Chinese national.

The incident occurred on February 14, when Nkomazanah, in uniform, stopped the complainant for an alleged traffic offense.

He accused the complainant of using a cell phone while driving and ordered him to drive to the Harare Central Police Station.

Once they arrived at Karigamombe Building, Nkomazanah called Fablano, who boarded the vehicle and began searching the complainant’s belongings. Fablano reportedly stole US$10 000 from the complainant’s satchel.

Under threat from Nkomazanah, the complainant reluctantly handed over US$25, but realized later that Fablano had already taken the larger sum. The case was referred to the Anti-Corruption Unit, and on February 18, detectives observed the two officers extorting motorists along Samora Machel Avenue.

After a brief chase, they were apprehended with assistance from the public.

The officers face charges for their unsanctioned actions, including demanding bribes and stealing from the complainant.

They have been remanded in custody, with their bail hearing scheduled for today.
