Tungwarara pledges to leave no war veteran behind

Zimbabwe's presidential advisor, Paul Tungwarara, has pledged to ensure that every war veteran benefits from the government's welfare programs.

This commitment comes as the government launches the War Veterans Welfare Fund, aimed at uplifting the livelihoods of liberation war veterans.

Speaking at the launch of the Harare provincial fund, Tungwarara emphasised that he will push for the programs to reach every war veteran, regardless of their location or circumstances.

"I will persuade President Mnangagwa until all of these programs reach every war veteran," he said.

The government's initiatives include interest-free loans, borehole drilling schemes, and housing programs. However, some war veterans have expressed skepticism about the government's commitment to their welfare, citing past unfulfilled promises.

War Veterans League secretary Douglas Mahiya welcomed Tungwarara's pledge, urging veterans to embrace the programs.

“Comrades, we lived for over 40 years, as war veterans without a portfolio in the party. Now we have a portfolio in the party. As war veterans we committed time and life for the independence of this country,” Mahiya said.

“We are disciplined soldiers. Today we have the vision 2030 issue, we don’t compromise of power. We don’t compromise on power. We will do what is neccesary that we can retain power.”

Mahiya said war veterans are now 35 000 or below across the country are struggling to survive.

The development comes as war veterans prepare to meet with President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the coming weeks to discuss their welfare and the future of the government's programs.
