MUNYARADZI BLESSING DOMA- Zim Now Reporter
Zimbabwe has made progress in achieving gender equality, but much still needs to be done as there are impediments that continue to hinder women from reaching their full potential, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, has said.
Minister Mutsvangwa also emphasized that the government cannot achieve gender equality alone; hence, all stakeholders have a crucial role to play.
She made these remarks on Wednesday during an International Women’s Day press conference in Harare.
Minister Mutsvangwa further stated that while International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8, Zimbabwe will hold its National Launch this Friday (March 7) at Munyarari Secondary School in Mutare, Manicaland Province.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day commemorations is “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
"While we reflect on the progress made towards gender equality, we must also acknowledge the persistent challenges that remain.
"Women and girls continue to face systemic barriers in terms of access to markets, finance, gender stereotypes, biases, and gender-based violence that impede their ability to reach their full potential.
It is our collective responsibility to address these injustices and create a world where women and girls have equal opportunities, rights, and freedoms," said Minister Mutsvangwa.
She also called on all stakeholders to complement government efforts in achieving gender equality.
"This commemoration gives us an opportunity to celebrate our achievements as a nation, such as women's meaningful participation in all sectors, particularly in decision-making and leadership, which are key drivers of national development.
"As we celebrate International Women's Day, we call upon all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, the private sector, and individuals, to join us in this crucial effort. Together, we can create a world where all women and girls enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and empowerment.
In conclusion, let us work hand in hand to ensure that all women and girls have the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest."
She further encouraged women to take advantage of government programs that promote empowerment, legal rights, climate change adaptation and mitigation, agriculture, and mining, among others.
Minister Mutsvangwa also revealed that the country has introduced the National Women in Leadership and Decision-Making Strategy 2023-2030 to increase women’s participation in leadership positions across the public, political, and private sectors.
"To reflect his commitment, the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has appointed the first-ever female Attorney General, Prosecutor General, and the first female officer cadet trained as a Brigadier General.
“Additionally, the Constitution provides for women and youth quotas in the National Assembly, Senate, and local government.”
The local government sector has witnessed an increase in women's representation to 33%, the highest ever recorded, due to the 30% quota at the local level. Without this quota, women's representation in local government would have been just 12%, representing those who won seats through direct election.
This year’s celebrations are particularly significant as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark in the global pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
In Zimbabwe, our commitment to creating a society where women and girls have equal access to opportunities, resources, and services remains unwavering.
We recognize the importance of empowering women and girls to fully participate in the socio-economic and political development of our nation."*
Minister Mutsvangwa also highlighted that various activities have been lined up for the commemorations at Munyarari Secondary School, including exhibitions where women will showcase their products such as handicrafts, food, and agricultural produce.
Health, financial, agricultural, and legal services will also be offered on-site.
Additionally, performances by local artists will celebrate the nation’s culture and heritage, while various speakers will make presentations on key issues aligned with this year’s theme.
