Archbishop Andby Chikururu is urging churches across Africa to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and pray for peace, saying Africa’s own history of liberation gives the continent a deeper understanding of the importance of freedom.
Speaking following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Embassy of the State of Palestine and Johane the Fifth of Africa International Church in Harare on Wednesday, Archbishop Chikururu said African churches should use their voices to promote peace and solidarity.
“I want to urge other churches in Africa: let us pray for Palestine. As Africans, we understand the value of freedom because many of our countries fought for liberation. We must stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and pray for peace,” he said.
The Archbishop linked his call to Africa’s history, in which many countries fought against colonial rule and for independence.
Zimbabwe’s own liberation history has also shaped relations between Zimbabwe and Palestine, with the two sides often referring to their shared experiences and solidarity during their respective struggles.

The call came as Johane the Fifth of Africa International Church and the Embassy of the State of Palestine formalised their relationship through an MoU on solidarity and cooperation.
Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamer Almassri said the agreement would open a new chapter of cooperation between the Palestinian people and churches in Zimbabwe.
“We are proud to sign this Memorandum of Understanding and solidarity cooperation between the Embassy of the State of Palestine and Johane the Fifth of Africa International Church. This MoU will open a new chapter of cooperation between the Palestinian people and the churches in Zimbabwe, starting from today,” he said.
Ambassador Almassri said Palestine valued its relationship with Zimbabwe and the solidarity expressed by Zimbabwean communities and churches.
The MoU is the first agreement of its kind signed between the Palestinian Embassy in Zimbabwe and Johane the Fifth of Africa International Church.
Archbishop Chikururu used the occasion to extend his call to churches across Africa, urging them to pray for Palestine and stand in solidarity with its people.
