The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency has issued a public alert, warning citizens to be cautious of fraudsters impersonating census officials.
The agency urged the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a ZIMSTAT or Ministry of Home Affairs representative before providing any personal information.
In a statement released today, ZIMSTAT highlighted that fraudsters have been visiting households under the pretense of preparing for the upcoming census count.
"ZIMSTAT does not conduct unannounced visits to households requesting personal identification without proper authorization," said Roland Chiringa, ZIMSTAT's Public Relations and Communications representative.
Chiringa further explained that legitimate ZIMSTAT officers can be identified by their credentials, which include a national identity card, a government-issued identity card, an official letter from ZIMSTAT, and a branded ZIMSTAT shirt or T-shirt. He emphasized that any individuals failing to provide these credentials should be immediately reported to the nearest police station for verification.
ZIMSTAT also provided contact details for verification, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Chiringa reiterated that security and privacy remain top priorities and encouraged communities to be alert in order to protect themselves from fraudsters.
