Marondera residents are peddling furiously—not on their bicycles, but on social media—after their municipality dropped a bombshell announcement requiring all bicycle owners to pay a $5 annual license fee.
According to a statement shared on the municipality’s social media spaces, riding an unlicensed bicycle within Marondera will soon be considered an offence. And local residents, already juggling rising costs of living, are baffled by the sudden enforcement.
In a statement released on March 11, the municipality declared that all bicycle owners must cough up an annual license fee of $51.
“Cyclists and bicycle owners are hereby reminded that it is an offence to cycle an unlicensed bicycle within the municipal jurisdiction of any local authority,” reads notice.
The shock comes at a time residents in the eastern town assumed they had dodged the most bizarre bullet with the municipality's recent resolution to enumerate dogs through a proposed census. They now find they are also going to be saddled with bicycle license fees!
