Norton Big Boys Chase Top Spot

The Norton Big Boys remain the only unbeaten side in the ZIFA Mashonaland East Division 2B East following an impressive start to the season.

With three games in hand and only two points separating them from log leaders Berks FC, who have collected 36 points from 15 matches, the Norton Big Boys could move to the top of the table if they win their outstanding fixtures.

The club, which boasts several former Premier Soccer League (PSL) players, has attracted attention for its strong performances despite competing in a lower division. ZimNow spoke to some of the experienced players to find out whether the league has proved too easy for a side whose players previously competed at a higher level.

Former PSL player Oscar Machapa, popularly known as Mahindra, said the team is still being tested and has realised the need to continue improving.

“I can say that, as a side, we feel we have worked hard and now need to restructure, which means the league is quite competitive,” said Machapa.

Machapa added that the club’s main target is promotion to the Northern Region Division One League, where they expect to face even stronger competition.

“All we are aiming for is promotion and the opportunity to play in the Northern Region Division One, where there is more competition. But where we are now, with the name Big Boys, every club is eager to defeat the legends,” he said.

The Norton Big Boys have also begun investing in younger players as they seek to balance the experience of their former PSL stars with youthful energy and endurance.

Head coach Marvelous Gutuza, who takes charge when Rodreck Mutuma is unavailable, said the club’s decision to bring in young players is aimed at matching the energy of opponents throughout the 90 minutes.

“We have signed Scans Nyandoro, an 18-year-old, and he comes onto the pitch in the 60th or 65th minute of the game to inject energy into the team. Using him as a substitute also helps protect the young player from injury, as he still has a lot of time ahead of him in football,” said Gutuza.

Speaking about joining the Big Boys, 18-year-old Evans Nyandoro said the opportunity to play alongside former top-flight players has allowed him to learn and develop his game.

“I grew up hearing the names of players like Evans Gwekwerere, who was even sung about by Alick Macheso, as well as Oscar Machapa, Tafadzwa Rusike, Charles Honde and many others. So, playing in the same team with these players has helped me learn a lot from them, especially the basics of football, which will help me progress,” he said.

Nyandoro added that he is determined to give his best and make the most of the opportunity to play alongside experienced players.

“I had to give it my all and do my best so that I would not disappoint the big brothers,” he said.
