In a significant meeting on March 21, 2023, the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Harare, Cheng Yan, met with the Permanent Secretary of the Zimbabwean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Albert Chimbindi.
According to a release from the Chinese Embassy, the two sides discussed relations in light of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which falls this year.
During the meeting, Cheng Yan expressed China's readiness to strengthen coordination and deepen cooperation with Zimbabwe. He emphasized that China aims to actively implement the significant consensus reached by the two heads of state and jointly realize the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The goal is to improve the well-being of the two peoples.
Albert Chimbindi, in response, expressed gratitude for China's long-standing and valuable support for Zimbabwe. He reiterated Zimbabwe's support for the important concepts and initiatives proposed by China and its firm adherence to the One-China policy.
Chimbindi also pledged Zimbabwe's commitment to deepening cooperation with China across all fields. This meeting underscores the strong and enduring relationship between China and Zimbabwe, a relationship that has been built over more than four decades, as it goes back to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
The two nations have a history of mutual support and cooperation, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, agriculture, and education.
The 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations serves as a reminder of the shared history and a platform for further strengthening the bond between the two nations.
