Government has announced plans to recruit 8 000 teachers by the end of the year to address ongoing staff shortages in schools, particularly in rural areas.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira, speaking in Parliament on behalf of the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, confirmed the recruitment drive.

He emphasised the government’s commitment to fully staffing schools with qualified teachers but noted that the shortage stems from budgetary constraints rather than a lack of trained educators.

"The programme is ongoing, and this year alone, 8,000 teachers have been authorized for recruitment. This is part of our long-term strategy to ensure every school has access to well-trained educators," Prof. Murwira said.

Legislators raised concerns about schools that have gone years without teachers for critical subjects like Mathematics, Science, and Geography. Desire Nkala pressed the government on short-term solutions for students preparing for O-Level and A-Level exams.

In response, Prof. Murwira urged patience, assuring that recruitment efforts will gradually ease the crisis.

"We understand the urgency, and we are working with the Treasury and Public Service Commission to ensure a sustainable solution," he said.
