Bracken Fern Threatens Livestock and Residents in Chipinge

Farmers in Chipinge are facing significant losses as bracken fern, a poisonous plant, continues to claim the lives of livestock. The situation has raised alarm among residents, with reports suggesting that some butcheries are selling meat from sick or deceased cattle, posing a health risk to the community.

Dr. Willard Chandavengerwa, a District Veterinary Services official, confirmed that investigations are ongoing following the deaths of more than 40 cattle this year.
“We urge farmers to be vigilant and take preventive measures to protect their herds. It is also critical to raise awareness about the dangers of consuming contaminated meat,” he said.

Councillor Paul Singizi called for immediate intervention, stressing the need to protect both animal and human health.
“Villagers must be informed about the risks associated with meat from affected animals to prevent possible foodborne diseases,” he said.
