Congo Commutes Death Sentences for US Citizens in Failed Coup Attempt

The Democratic Republic of Congo has commuted the death sentences of three United States citizens who were convicted for their roles in a failed coup attempt in May 2024.

The trio—part of a group led by Congolese-American rebel leader Christian Malanga—had initially been sentenced to death alongside more than 50 others after the armed attack on presidential offices in Kinshasa. The dramatic assault, which was livestreamed on social media, left several people dead and sent shockwaves through the region.

Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi's government confirmed the commutations this week, citing diplomatic discussions with U.S. officials and concerns around fair trial standards.

The three Americans will now serve lengthy prison terms in place of capital punishment.

The U.S. State Department has yet to comment on the decision, but advocacy groups had raised alarms about the quick trial and the risk of political retaliation in the case.
