The Harare City Council has launched a comprehensive bed bug spraying campaign in the high-density suburb of Mbare after confirming an infestation in the area. The initiative, which began on Monday, focused on Matererini and Matapi Flats, two of the most heavily affected locations.

In a statement released on Sunday, Stanley Gama, the City’s corporate communications manager, urged residents to cooperate with the council teams during the spraying process, which started early on Monday morning. The aim of the operation is to reduce the bed bug population and prevent the pests from spreading further throughout the community.

Alongside the spraying, the Harare City Council is running an awareness campaign to educate residents about the causes of infestations, such as overcrowding, and to share preventive measures. Gama emphasized the importance of community involvement in the effort, stating that volunteers would be needed to ensure thorough coverage. However, he also stressed that spraying alone would not fully address the issue.

“Bed bugs hide in small crevices on beds, sofas, wardrobes, walls, etc., so regular physical cleaning is essential in areas where chemicals can’t reach,” Gama explained. The city is urging residents to take an active role in tackling the infestation.
