Zimbabwe is poised to harvest 2 million tons of maize this season, surpassing its annual requirement of 1.8 million tons and marking a dramatic rebound from last year’s drought.
Consistent rains from December to March, coupled with innovative farming practices, have fueled this agricultural triumph, according to the government.
Preliminary data from CLAFA 2 (assessing 1,600 wards) and NDVI satellite imagery confirm nationwide crop health.
Government has also applauded the adoption of climate-smart techniques like Pfumvudza and expanded irrigation systems.
Authorities and farmers’ unions hail the season as a “turning point” for food security.
“This surplus ensures affordable grain for all Zimbabweans and stabilizes prices,” said an economic analyst.
He said Zimbabwe’s strengthened food security is a boon for the whole region, which was affected by the El Nino induced drought in the previous season.
