Valley Seed has launched two new wheat varieties—Zambezi and Limpopo—engineered to withstand climate extremes and increase productivity ahead of the 2025 winter cropping season.
“We are happy to present the two new varieties produced after extensive research. The Zambezi and Limpopo are climate-proof and yield between seven to eight tonnes per hectare. They are short-seasoned, meaning if planted on time, they mature before the rains,” said Siamsipa Mwami, Production Manager at Valley Seed.
Technical Director Patrick Sajeni confirmed the seed is already in stock and ready for distribution.
“We have finished packing all the quantities required under the programme. Once we get the green light from government, we will begin deliveries to all GMB depots,” he said.
The seed launch comes as Zimbabwe gears up to plant 120,000 hectares of wheat in 2025, including 5,000 hectares under the Presidential Inputs Scheme.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to boost food security and reduce dependence on wheat imports.
